Personal statement

My work arises from a childhood spent in the Pennines where, I believe, industry is the drive behind communities in these localised areas. The information revolution, rise of computers, high speed cable and such technologies are opening up these areas, transforming these places and people in radical ways.

My practical concerns lie in developing further by exhibiting, Vjing and developing my growing media business.

I work with musicians and therefore have extensive knowledge of making and recording music. I am keen to co-ordinate with other artists and have worked alongside musicians on soundtracks for many of my films.

I have also been involved in projecting video live for musicians at bars and clubs around Leeds, On one occasion for BBC Live Weekend and also at the Bristol Academy for ‘Blowpop’ a club night which was founded by John Stapleton Who established Dope On Plastic.

Providing Visual solutions for many now popular artists such as Gilles Peterson (Radio 1) and The Cinematic Orchestra (Ninja Tune), The Freestylers, Plump DJ’s Krafty Kuts, Hexstatic, Breakestra, DJ Format, Fingathing, Ugly Duckling, Freq Nasty, and at other gigs such as Burnley Mechanics Anti Nazi rally for Uncut, Dj Woody, Basement Jaxx, and Tim Westwood. And more recentlt Paul Daley (Leftfield) John Ellis (Cinematic Orchestra)

Whilst studying Sculpture at Bretton Hall College and the University of Leeds I was able to ambitiously explore my skills in a wide variety of ways, producing Installation, video and photography that centralised around creative technology. I have always had a keen interest in photographic processes and this combined with my own experiments in video have helped to further my practice in the digital arts.

Bath TV
The clear bath installation is derived from everyday perpetual experience and submersion, in an over stimulated and over indulged environment. The transparent bath tub featured in the centre of the exhibition space on a plinth. This was then encircled with televisions which displayed my film from a variety of angles; through the water and sides of the bath, whilst above projections cast colour from my films on muslin screens, that were fixed around the plinth. The bath also featured a live model who was projected upon.

Chairtv

Other works also revolved around television culture, a prototype bath with actual screens and active speaker system and a TV chair. Film made with ‘TV Chair’ features throughout my DVD and can be projected virtually anywhere and as a result, exhibited with ease.
Some of my work encourages interaction, creative technology, running water, live model, live audio, therefore, health and safety issues undoubtedly arise. These have to be dealt with effectively and safely.

My work is flexible and installations are created to suit each venue.
Film content is basically made from live surveillance at each exhibition, and pre-recorded material from previous exhibitions. Some of the film featured can found on my DVD.This film is the beginnings of my work, installations in which I investigate and explore technologies old and new.

I produce a wide range of Digital images which are available for purchase in addition to my DVD. I have a passion for photography and have an extensive portfolio of work and my own darkroom facilities.

Chairtv is currently producing Animation to the music of johnellismusic.com (cinematic orchestra), Fingers crossed this will go on sale in Manchester and London in well know graphics stores. (dates to be confirmed).
